LinkedIn & Personal Branding

LinkedIn & Personal Branding

As part of the Hands-On Digital Marketing course, we worked with personal branding and LinkedIn optimisation. The goal was to strengthen our professional online presence and create a profile that reflects both our competencies and career ambitions.

The project focused on identifying our strengths, defining a target audience, optimising our LinkedIn profiles, and developing a personal brand that is authentic and relevant to future employers and professional connections.

Defining My Personal Brand

One of the first steps in the project was reflecting on how I wanted to present myself professionally online. Personal branding is about more than listing qualifications and experience—it is about communicating values, strengths, and ambitions in a way that feels authentic.

By reviewing my existing profile, I identified opportunities to create a stronger connection between my personal story, educational background, and professional goals. This process helped me develop a clearer understanding of how I want to be perceived by potential employers, professional connections, and others visiting my profile.

The About section became an important part of this process, allowing me to communicate both who I am and the direction I am pursuing within marketing and digital communication.

Optimising My LinkedIn Profile

The project involved reviewing and optimising several key elements of my LinkedIn profile to create a stronger and more professional online presence.

I updated my profile picture and banner to create a more consistent visual identity, improved my headline to better communicate my professional interests, and expanded both my education and work experience sections to provide a clearer overview of my background and competencies.

In addition, I added relevant skills, connected my personal website to my profile, customised my LinkedIn URL, and ensured that my profile reflected both my professional ambitions and personal values.

These improvements helped transform my profile from a basic online CV into a more complete representation of who I am, what I have learned, and the direction I want to pursue within marketing and digital communication.

What I learned

Throughout this project, I gained a greater understanding of how personal branding, networking, and professional communication work together to create a strong online presence.

One of the most valuable lessons was recognising that LinkedIn is much more than an online CV. It can be used to build professional relationships, share knowledge, showcase achievements, and engage with a wider network.

Creating and sharing content on LinkedIn also demonstrated the importance of actively participating in professional communities rather than simply maintaining a profile. By engaging with the platform, I was able to strengthen my visibility while developing a better understanding of how personal branding can support future career opportunities.

Reflection

Working with LinkedIn and personal branding gave me a greater appreciation for the importance of maintaining a professional online presence. Throughout the project, I learned how different elements of a profile—from visual presentation to written content—work together to create a consistent personal brand.

The process encouraged me to reflect on how I present myself professionally and highlighted the value of connecting my LinkedIn profile with my personal website and portfolio. It also demonstrated how personal branding is an ongoing process that develops alongside new experiences, skills, and career ambitions.
